Marvel-ous Monday: "When a Galaxy Beckons..." by Friedrich, Springer, and Colletta

Greetings, Groove-ophiles! We're back with another "Green Uniform" Captain Marvel tale! The creative team of Gary Friedrich, Frank Springer, and Vinnie Colletta get cosmic...and start working to--believe it or not--reverse the Mar-Vell's previous cosmic upgrade! Not only that, but the ish officially ties into a storyline that crosses in and out of Sub-Mariner #14 and Avengers #64 (see page 3 for details), and features Marv vs. Iron Man (thanks to the evil machinations of The Puppet Master)! From Captain Marvel #14 (March 1969)...what'cha gonna do..."When a Galaxy Beckons..."?

  1. What a crossover it was! The trio of Puppet Master, Egghead, and Mad Thinker were especially evil in this quartet of tales (two in Avengers) which saw some pretty big moments. The CM tale as you say brought us the beginning of the end of the ZO era and the beginning of the red and blue Mar-Vell a few issues later. Sub-Mariner saw the return of Toro and his seeming demise. The Avengers stories brought us the end of "Hawkeye" and the rise of a new Goliath, and we learned Clint Barton's name for the first time too. I love this time, it's my golden era.

  2. My memory of the green CM has been distorted by time. I remembered that there was nothing good from issues # 5 - 15, until we got our new costumed CM. But I see now that 14 and 15 were pretty good since you've reprinted them here. I've been especially taken with the art team of Frank Springer and Vince Colletta. There were some pretty inventive layouts from Mr. Springer. And he and Colletta meshed very well together. He should have stuck with pencilling as I consider him one of the 3 worst inkers ever. Thanks for redeeming my remembrances of comics collecting past.
